The Last House on the Left is a 2009 revenge horror thriller film directed by Dennis Iliadis and written by Adam Alleca and Carl Ellsworth. A remake of the 1972 film of the same name, it stars Tony Goldwyn, Monica Potter, Garret Dillahunt, Aaron Paul, Spencer Treat Clark, Riki Lindhome, Martha MacIsaac, and Sara Paxton. The film follows Mari Collingwood, a teenager who is abducted, raped, and left for dead by a family of violent fugitives.

That is a federal anti-discrimination law that bars discrimination based on shared ancestry, ethnic characteristics or national origin. Adding IHRA’s definition to the law would allow the federal Department of Education to restrict funding and other resources to campuses perceived as tolerating anti-Semitism. If the bill were to become law, it would codify a definition of anti-Semitism created by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) in Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. First, we have legislative jurisdiction over the city of Washington, D.C. We’ve already passed legislation signed into law that rescinds D.C.’s soft-on-crime policies. We are going to have an emergency hearing Wednesday with the Mayor and Police Chief of Washington, D.C. We want to make sure MPD is working with campus police to ensure the safety of all the students. Second, we want to follow the money trail to see if outside groups are paying for these activities.

Uniting all of antisemitism’s strands is a persistent demonization that casts Jews not only as “others” (i.e., as intrinsically different or alien) but also as irredeemably threatening and dangerously powerful — as troublemakers, shysters, capitalists, anarchists, communists, sexual degenerates, etc. The elements that make up antisemitism derive from various historical conditions, and in our current time combine to form pejorative claims that include religion, race, culture and politics. They portray Jews as secretive, manipulative, untrustworthy, controlling, and dangerous — as well as responsible for other people’s suffering.

Stefanik also addressed the pro-Hamas, antisemitic rioting mob that took over an academic building at Columbia last night and reiterated her commitment to hold America’s so-called elite colleges and universities accountable. “The semantic and interpretive morass around defining antisemitism underscores the essential futility of the enterprise of codifying a kind of bigotry in speech and thought, something we have never needed to do, and have never done, in statute. We have multiple laws against acts of race, sex, religious and age discrimination but nowhere do we attempt to codify the general meaning of ‘racism,’ ‘sexism,’ ‘religious animus,’ or ‘ageism,’ for example. The general phenomenon of the contemptuous attitude described becomes recognizable and actionable only in the conduct of a perpetrator committing specific criminal or civilly wrongful actions.

Its visceral brutality is more repulsive than engrossing, but The Last House on the Left nevertheless introduces director Wes Craven as a distinctive voice in horror. The parents accidentally find out the identities of the killers, because of a stolen locket and some blood-stained clothing in their baggage. Enraged, the father takes on the gang single-handedly and murders them. Setting aside the modern details, this is roughly the plot of Ingmar Bergman's "The Virgin Spring." I think David had that insane actor psycho side, but also this beautiful hippie Laurel Canyon side to him as well.

I really enjoyed his music, I listened to it for years after I met him. I wish I had my old answering machine with messages from him asking me when we were going to make “Cabin Fever 2” together. I’d like to reconnect with his kids Bo and Jesse as well, they were pretty great. When Quentin wanted to use the music in “The Hateful Eight” I put him in touch with the same people who helped me back in the day.

While the film initially received a polarizing reception from critics, it was highly profitable, grossing over $3 million at the domestic box office. “In this sense, the essential emptiness of the IHRA definition is apparently its appeal. 6090 directs the Department of Education to ‘take into consideration’ the contentless IHRA Definition (‘a certain perception’), which means the legislation adds essentially nothing to the prevailing common-sense approach Department of Education officials use to understand antisemitism.

It was a blast to see the music with my first film in cinemas, and gave me an excuse to talk about how much I love the music. In December 2019, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order asking federal agencies to expand the interpretation of Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act to include the IHRA’s definition of antisemitism. The IHRA definition of antisemitism includes modern manifestations of antisemitism like justifying the killing of Jews and holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel. - Today, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik voted in favor of the bipartisan Antisemitism Awareness Act to require the Department of Education to use the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA)’s working definition of antisemitism and its contemporary examples when enforcing anti-discrimination laws. Just look at the abject failure of Columbia’s president to enforce their own code of conduct that they gave lip service to during the recent Education and Workforce hearing.

Storyline

Krug attempts to flee, but after being cornered by a traumatized Sadie and a chainsaw-wielding John, he is incapacitated by an electrocution booby trap. After a scuffle between her and Estelle, she falls into the backyard swimming pool where her throat is slit by Estelle. Like the exploitation films Night of the Living Dead (1968) and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), the film has received critical reevaluation years after release, with particular praise towards the narrative and performances of Peabody and Hess. It has since achieved a cult following and received a nomination for AFI's 100 Years...100 Thrills in 2001. As they try to find the key to their boat so that they can take Mari to the hospital, Francis happens upon Mari. When going after Krug and Sadie, who are in bed, they find Justin holding Krug's gun; Justin gives the gun to John so that he can kill Krug.

Moreover, for this legislation to pass constitutional muster, courts would have to use the canon of ‘constitutional avoidance,’ meaning that it would have to be interpreted to avoid collision with First Amendment values and boundaries. Thus, if any actual speech is targeted on a viewpoint-specific basis, the Department of Education could not lawfully act against speech on that basis and, if it does, it would have to be deemed unconstitutional. For example, if a university prohibits students from opposing ‘any form of religious or ethnic nationalism except Zionism’ or, in reverse, prohibits students from opposing ‘Zionism but not any other form of religious or ethnic nationalism,’ this would be textbook viewpoint discrimination under the First Amendment. I don't want to give the impression, however, that this is simply a good horror movie. It's horrifying, all right, but in ways that have nothing to do with the supernatural.

Craven has said that The Last House on the Left was inspired, in part, by the explicit footage that was piped into news segments on Vietnam war, but wasn’t reflected by the horror and action films being produced at the time. The country was willing to send its young people off to war, but it couldn’t confront the same violence and death in a theater. It’s hard to define the film’s political point of view, other than a prevailing feeling that wars were being fought at home, too, and that the idealism of the love generation had curdled into bad vibes. It may not be a film about America or Vietnam per se, but it’s an essential mood ring of the early 70s.

Estelle and her husband rush into the woods, where they find Mari's body and decide to take revenge. Estelle pretends to seduce Weasel, bites off his penis, and leaves him to bleed to death. Krug escapes into the living room and overpowers John before manipulating Junior into killing himself.

By then, he had already released a solo album, “The Promise,” in 1976. He spent many years off the scene, part of that time consulting on composing music for computers for Atari, the video game maker, before recording a second album, “Among the Stars,” in 1995. He also recorded two albums for children, “Planet With One Mind” (1995) and “A People With One Heart” (1996), in which he told stories, accompanied by his musical arrangements. Over the years, The Last House on the Left has gained a reputation that’s as queasily polarized as its own swings between savage violence and slapstick comedy. On the one hand, it’s a high-minded debasement of Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring, as much a throbbing counterculture hangover as the Rolling Stones’ Altamont documentary Gimme Shelter was two years before. On the other, it’s a film full of such pitiless sadism that UK censors refused to certify the film for cinema release, and in the 1980s it was placed on a list of potentially obscene “video nasties” – it then remained unavailable in uncut form in Britain until 2008.

I went to a screening of it at the Cinematheque while I was editing “Cabin Fever” and saw Wes Craven speak. And it was during that screening that I thought,“You could never use music like this in a horror movie today.” Then it occurred to me, what if I used that same music in “Cabin Fever? ” “Cabin Fever” was more like “Cabin Favor” — everyone was doing it for free in the hopes of some back-end money (which luckily paid off) and our entire music budget for source music was $1,500. So I found David Hess and told him I’d like to use six songs in the film, and he was so gracious and generous. He said I could do it but we had to record “Wait for the Rain” with his kids, and the entire music budget would go to his friend Greg Hilfman who would engineer the session. I said absolutely, and thought it was perfect for the end credits.

I first saw it in a theater when I was a freshman at NYU and the producer Roy Frumkes screened a 16mm print, and I believe David Szulkin was there or set it up. David and I had gone to high school together and he was starting a book on “Last House on the Left” at the time, which I thought was pretty impressive. I liked the film but didn’t dare write a book about it, you really had to know your Krug to do that. I didn’t feel good after I saw “Last House on the Left,” but I never forgot it. It’s not the type of film one can enjoy, but you can certainly admire it, both in its filmmaking technique and the unflinching way Craven deals with the subject matter.

The United States House of Representatives has overwhelmingly passed a bill that would expand the federal definition of anti-Semitism, despite opposition from civil liberties groups. Rights groups warn that the definition could further chill freedom of speech as protests continue on college campuses. While Mr. Fetterman may have been in the minority among his political peers, with most of whom following the president’s example and opting for a traditional tux, creative black tie proved a talking point. See Billy Porter in a black sequin caftan over a classic white shirt; Questlove, in an artistically paint-splattered jacket; and Fran Drescher, the SAG-AFTRA president, in a white brocade pantsuit. Kevin Gilbert, 62, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a statement from Middlesex County prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and South River Police Chief Mark Tinitigan. "Last House on the Left" is a tough, bitter little sleeper of a movie that's about four times as good as you'd expect.
